Royal Commission into Genetic Modification (GM)
The Commission
Terms of Reference:
The Commission is the highest level of formal enquiry and is expected
to attract world-wide attention.
It is hoped the evidence presented will rely upon scientific
evidence and logic, rather than emotion and suppositon.
The enquiry will address the following issues:
- Where, how and for what purpose genetic modification and its products
are being used in New Zealand.
- The evidence and uncertainty about applications of genetic modification
and the use of genetically modified organisms and products.
- The risks and benefits from the use or avoidance of genetic modification
technologies and products, and how they are likely to be distributed.
- The Crown's responsibilities under the Treaty of Waitangi in relation
to genetic modification.
- The international legal obligations that New Zealand faces regarding
genetic modification.
Submissions from interested parties are welcome and may include the
opportunity to appear before the Commission in person.
