To exceed society's safety health and environmental protection expectations.
The New Zealand Chemical Industry Council (NZCIC) is a 'not for profit' industry
association responsible for implementing and promoting Responsible Care,
the international safety, health and environmental (SH&E) protection initiative
practised by the chemical industry in more than 45 countries worldwide.
Our activities focus on helping employers comply with New Zealand's demanding
workplace safety and environmental protection legislation.
We assist employers to develop and implement sound SH&E management practices
which demonstrate their commitment to protecting employees, the community and
our environment.
A key role is to helping to develop the legislation, national performance
standards and environmental reporting criteria which has positioned the NZCIC
as a centre of technical excellence for SH&E performance.
The Council has unrivalled expertise in the safe management of hazardous substances.
Since our establishment in 1985, the NZCIC:

continuous improvement in national SH&E performance

- implemented the PRINCE© accreditation scheme which assesses SH&E
performance and rewards superior performance
- continues to foster the debate about improving SH&E performance.
The NZCIC introduced the international Responsible Care programme in
1991. Responsible Care is the international chemical industry's commitment
to safeguarding employees and the community while protecting the environment
We have developed the Responsible Care ethic into a comprehensive and
practical SH&E management system for New Zealand employers. The Responsible
Care Management System enables employers to comply with complex SH&E
protection legislation while providing enforcement authorities with a best-practice
checklist for assessing compliance.
The NZCIC offers PRINCE© accreditation, our CHEMCALL® emergency response
service and the unique Responsible Care Manager's Handbook© to every employer
wishing to demonstrate compliance and practice continuous improvement.
As the chemical industry's representative, and advocate, we work closely with
government, industry associations and the enforcement agencies to ensure our
members interests are advanced. Our primary activities involve:
- helping our members to comply with SH&E protection legislation, particularly
involving the management of hazardous substances
- providing employers with the SH&E performance standards and guidance
they need to demonstrate compliance
- recognising employers who meet and exceed their legal and moral obligations
to their employees, the community and our environment
The NZCIC works constantly to ensure the public is aware of the benefits that
sound chemistry, industry innovation and superior SH&E performance contribute
to a better, healthier and safer world.
