Applause for Council Initiatives

“The chemical industry and your Council are leading the way in showing a true commitment to economic, social, and environmental responsibility.”

The Minister of Labour and the Environment, Hon. Trevor Mallard, praised the Council’s proactive approach to helping government and business to achieve the ambitious goals of the National Health and Safety Strategy to 2015.

The Council’s involvement with the Department of Labour, the Ministry for the Environment, the Accident Compensation Corporation and the Environmental Risk Management Authority was cited by the Minister as a leading example of an effective partnership between the chemical industry and government. The Labour  Minister singled out the Council’s assistance in training Workplace Inspectors and HSNO Test Certifiers, facilitating discussion between our members and enforcement agencies and encouraging companies and individuals to lead by example, as being particularly appreciated by government.

Presenting the latest batch of PRINCE® site certifications, the Minister noted Responsible Care®and PRINCE® clearly demonstrate our members’ commitment to encouraging a positive safety culture.

Delivering the Labour Minister’s speech when he was recalled to Parliament, ACC Minister Maryan Street highlighted the steps her department was taking to recognize more chemical-induced illnesses and diseases. An amendment to the Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act in June provides wider access to cover and greater clarity about the support available to those adversely affected by exposure to chemicals in their workplace.
